Besides Trinitron picture tubes and Walkmans, Sony is also known for their headphones. Through the years, Sony's popularity has waned and their popular Walkman has gotten usurped by Apple's iPod/iPhone. One might think that Sony's days are numbered, but they have survived by restructuring the company. Back in the 80s, Sony's Twin Turbo earbuds were popular with enthusiasts, but these days competition is fierce. Does the Sony DR-EX14 VP offer something different? The short answer is yes. However, it may not be the reason one may think. Smartphones have overtaken MP3 players in popularity. There are even rumors on the World Wide Web that the Apple iPod's days are numbered because of the popularity of the iPhone. One of the problems with smartphones is a compatibility issue. Most accessory manufacturers make accessories exclusively or released first for the iPhone. Users of other smartphone platforms are left to use iPhone accessories with compatibility issues or not use them at all. What the DR-EX14 VP offers is a balance between being the most technologically advanced and compatibility. Like most earphones for the iPhone, the DR-EX14 VP has a volume control. What's different is that it uses a rotary dial instead of push buttons. It may not be the most elegant solution, but it's a great compromise. Some Android phones, such as the ones made by Samsung, seem to have an issue with the usability of the remote. An analog rotary dial offers a good compromise because it is self contained and does not have to rely on the smartphone to increase or decrease the volume. The drawback is that because it can not change the volume on the smartphone, it's usage is somewhat limited. The DR-EX14 VP can also change the track, but unfortunately that feature is only limited to the Apple iPhone. While track control may be limited, the sound quality of the earphones are good, but not spectacular. Bass is only good as well. If one is looking for earphones with better bass, Sony offers the XB series earphones. The Sony DR-EX14 VP a good value for its price. Both the DR-EX14 VP and the DR-EX12 iP (iPhone version of the DR-EX14 VP) is a version of the MDR-EX10.
