Summary Review: Is It The Next Big Thing? ...Not Quite

Along with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung debuted the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.  The Galaxy Gear is powered by an 800 Mhz processor with a 1.63 inch display.  Yes, you guessed it, like Samsung's smartphones, the display is Super AMOLED.  It has a rugged yet classy design, the Galaxy Gear looks better in person than it does in pictures.  Is it the next big thing thou?  We don't think it's ready for that moniker yet.  It reminds us of  Sony's first Smartwatch, which is actually their second smartwatch.  Sony Liveview was their first.  While the device is responsive and fluid, it doesn't seem complete.  When using the Gmail app on the smartwatch, it just shows a Gmail logo on the display when messages come in.  When you click on the Gmail logo, you get a message to read it on your smartphone.  Isn't the purpose of a smartwatch so I don't have to pull out my smartphone?  Call quality isn't too bad on the smartwatch, but don't expect loud crystal clear sound.  It is possible to carry a conversation on the smartwatch however.  The Galaxy Gear also has a camera on the watchband.  It's only 1.9 Megapixels and it takes relatively decent shots.  Is it the next big thing?  Not quite yet.  There are a lot of refinements Samsung needs to make before it deserves that label.  Now the Galaxy Note 3, that really is the next big thing.
